Advanced Degrees

Training for the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run in the winter isn’t easy, especially when the temperature dips low, low, low. Recently I ran a 10K race in some very cold weather!

I needed help to get to this race. I needed some serious motivation, because staying snuggled under the covers where it was nice and warm was very tempting.  So I sent some texts and posted on Facebook and asked for help. Continue reading Advanced Degrees

The Win-Win Way To Run The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run

If you entered the lottery for the 2017 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run but didn’t get in, I have a story for you.

When I was a kid, I wanted a sparkly Michael Jackson glove so much. I mean, I wanted it BAD.

It was on my birthday wish list, but when my birthday came, no sparkly Michael Jackson glove. I was so sad. I was even a little angry. Then, a late birthday card arrived in the mail from a family member, and inside the card was some cash. I was able to buy myself that Michael Jackson glove.

If you entered the lottery for the 2017 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run but didn’t get in, you can buy your own sparkly glove…I mean, race entry! Just raise $500 before February 15 and you can earn a place in the 2017 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run as a Charity Race Participant.

Giving Tuesday for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

Tuesday, November 29, 2016, is #GivingTuesday, and Elizabeth is sharing one of the many reasons why she understands how important it is to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals through the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and Credit Unions for Kids. If you agree that all children should have access to the healthcare they need without regard to ability to pay, you can donate here too!

Running can HURT kids!

Yes, I’m trying to get your attention. But it’s also true.

Runner Spotlight: Deborah Brooks

Shh...don't tell anyone Supergirl's secret identity!
Shh…don’t tell anyone Supergirl’s secret identity!

I met Deborah Brooks when I was running past a water stop during my first half marathon. She is a Moms Run This Town (MRTT) Chapter leader in McLean, VA where she has successfully raised a husband and two teens.  She currently coaches Girls on The Run and hopes that she is helping to inspire the next generation of female runners. As a lifelong vegetarian, she is passionate about healthy living and exercise. She loves to showcase her vegetarian creations each week on her “Confessions of a Mother Runner” blog’s Meatless Monday link up. You will find her running with her crew or sweating it out at the gym training for the next crazy race someone talked her into. Continue reading Runner Spotlight: Deborah Brooks

She Works Hard for the Money (For Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals)

Money can’t buy happiness…or can it? Right now I’m working hard to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. But I’m not doing things like running a raffle (because I’m running miles). And I’m not doing jeans days (because I work from home and I usually wear comfy pjs so jeans are kind of a lot of work). I’ve had to get creative with my fundraising and here’s my plan.

I “met” David Heyman on twitter in 2014 when we were both preparing for the Philadelphia half marathon. His twitter feed is one of my favorites & is full of insights on what’s happening in Washington, DC – everything from sports, to politics, to the metro system. He also tracks how long it takes media outlets to report breaking news, shares travel tips, and (of course) has running-related content!

Wanted: Generous Runners Who Know Every Second Counts

How long will it take you to run the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run? This year, I’d love to run it in 90 minutes or less. Let’s say you finish in 90 minutes, too, and we cross the line together. That’s 5,400 seconds.

Did you know 62 children a minute enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment? That’s 1 child a second.

That means 5,400 children may enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment while we are participating in the Runners’ Rite of Spring and enjoying the view of the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and Hains Point.

Caregivers Need You

Friday, February 19 is National Caregiver Day, and that got me thinking about the parents who bring their kids to children’s hospitals. Continue reading Wanted: Generous Runners Who Know Every Second Counts

Jamie tackles Marine Corps, her second marathon, with ease

Jamie and I met a little over a year ago during Potomac River Running Distance Training, but she’s the kind of person that you feel like you’ve known your whole life. Now our kids run track together, she gives me mom advice (who knew elementary school would be so hard for me to navigate?!), and comes over to run on my basement treadmill when the winter weather makes an outdoor run treacherous. Everyone should have a friend like Jamie!

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run is the signature event of Credit Union Miracle Day, which is a nonprofit collaboration of credit union organizations engaged in fundraising activities to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals).

If you live in the D.C. area, you probably are familiar with Children’s National Medical Center, which is the local CMN Hospital affiliate. There are 136 children’s hospitals affiliated with the CMNH in the United States, and they treat over 10 million children annually across the U.S., providing state-of-the-art care‚ cutting edge research and preventative health education. If you, a family member or friend has been cared for at a CMN Hospital, you know first hand the quality of care they provide.

CUForKids

Credit Unions For Kids is the umbrella brand through which credit unions and affiliated organizations support the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. One hundred percent of every dollar donated by members of the credit union movement goes back to a community CMN Hospital. Each year, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals:

  • Provide $2.5 billion in charity care
  • Support cutting edge, life-saving research
  • Develop new, innovative technology which eases pain and lengthens lives
  • Treat 98% of all children needing heart or lung transplants
  • Treat 88% of all children with cancer
  • Treat 76% of all children with cystic fibrosis
  • Treat 72% of all children with pediatric AIDS

As you prepare to celebrate this holiday season, and shower gifts on the children in your life, please remember children with serious health conditions who need the cutting-edge care provided by CMN Hospitals, and join us in celebrating Giving Tuesday by donating to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals here.
